Gyakuten Kenji is a spinoff game starring prosecutor Miles Edgeworth and detective Dick Gumshoe. The investigation portions are presented using a third-person camera view. The game takes place before and after the events of Trials and Tribulations.

In this game we eschew the court and finally have shouting showdowns in the middle of places, streets, buildings… Which is weird, really. Imagine cross evidencing someone, in real life, in the middle of a coffee shop. Everyone would look at you weird!I came to this game…very fearful. Shu Takumi was not involved because it’s a spin-off focused on Edgeworth because he’s popular with the fans.

This game did a lot of good stuff but it also… Let’s start with the good! (☆^ー^☆)
This time we can investigate the crime scenes and both the design and UI has changed immensely from the main AA games. It feels more interactive, more like a detective story than a prosecutor really, and I really liked how we could walk around on the scenes! And interact with everything, even if it’s not a clue!
Well, I guess it’s making the Investigations part of the title work well with it.
It brought back all the old characters, brought new ones, and murders in new places. Like airplanes. And hangars. And…weird, random places. It’s odd, Edgeworth. Really odd.
See the thing is I felt a dissonance between this game. It wanted to be it’s own thing, play it’s own way. But then it brought the cross examinations into play and I didn’t like it. It was very heavy in use, and I had to do it a bunch, it became such a drag to cross examine goddamn everyone on all the places.
It was particularly noticeable in the Oldbag cross examination, she talks too much, but in this game it goes through the roof.
By the time the game came to a end I felt relief and also a bit disappointed. If the game had stuck more to being itself and not try to bring the mainline flavor into it, it’d have run smoother.
I don’t mean not have cross examinations, I just mean not have it as such a major point. The game was definitely 70℅ cross examination, and if it wasn’t, it felt like it. Which isn’t a good thing, really.
In the end I’d group this one with Justice for All, because I definitely felt they were weaker games. Perhaps if Shu Takumi had been involved it would’ve been better balanced, but alas. I so want to play the second game, specially since Gumshoe was dropped from the main series ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°
