Saya no Uta

Fuminori Sakisaka has a traffic accident which kills his parents and leaves him heavily injured. When he has a brain surgery to save his life, his perception of the world changes: everything he sees becomes blood and guts, people’s looks and voices seem like monsters, and food that normally appeals to him tastes disgusting.

As he contemplates suicide in the hospital, Fuminori meets a beautiful girl among the flesh-covered walls. She introduces herself as Saya, and is apparently looking for her father. Fuminori does not want to be separated from Saya, and asks her to live with him. She agrees.

I don’t have enough words to really explain why this visual novel is at the top of my most liked games list. I can say it’s a relatively short game, only 10 hours maximum to play through it all. It has 3 or 4 choices tops.

It’s a fucked up, beautiful game. I’m not really into porn games, or watching porn. I like reading it, but when it’s voiced and there’s lots of sounds it puts me off and squicks me out (my virginity/asexuality is coming across really strongly xDD).

But you see, in this game the 3 or so sex scenes that happen are supposed to squick you out. Saya looks like she’s 10 or so, a cute angel in the middle of the guts and wall meat MC sees. The humans look like monsters to him, and the Lovecraft vibe/influences are very vivid in this tale.

There isn’t a good ending per se. Not because the game is a horror game, and the descriptions were glorious and made me really disgusted at times, but because in order for one person to have their good ending, the rest get killed, shafted or worse.

Saya was an extremely interesting character. Not just because we know she’s not human, but because in a weird way she was innocent. She wasn’t trying to be a villain, she just wanted to meet her father, she just wanted to be loved. She wanted to help MC, it’s just the ways she did…

I’m not spoiling anything of the plot/story because it’s something to be experienced. But if you haven’t played Saya’s Song because sex scenes disgust you, or because it’s horror, let me assure you it’s worth it.

The horror in the game is more psychological and ambiance than it is something graphic, which I was thankful for considering I’ve never been able to play Silent Hill or Resident Evil because of my fear and response to it (running away, freezing and getting killed/panicking like a headless chicken…).

Saya no Uta writing is top notch, so is the translation, and Nitro+ became one of my favorite game makers because of this game alone.
