The Layton series are interesting. From the setting, to the plot that unravels like a good mystery novel, the art style that jumps to the eye, the aesthetic of it all… You can tell it’s a polished, lovely made game.
But.
Oh, how I hate to say this but:
Layton is not a series you play a lot, in a row, unless you’re deeply masochistic. From the beginning of the game to the end it’s an unstoppable machine of seeing how many puzzles it can thrown you in any given minute.
It’s exhausting. By the time I reached the end I was glad to see the back of Layton. I’m not that intelligent or smart but I swear they gave puzzles really weirdly just to fuck with you.
Oops, shouldn’t swear, this is a kid’s game…….bullshit! No kid is gonna be playing 10 puzzles in a row in under 5 minutes. WTF.
I liked the game, I just didn’t like how overbearing it was. I wanted a puzzle game, sure, but I also wanted story, which when given was really good. But the amount of puzzles…

I haven’t played Layton since this one because I was not ready to plunge into fucking puzzle hell after this romp.
This is not a negative review, I am giving a positive rating because the story was nice and when I finished I went all d’aww. But the puzzle hell is strong in this series. So beware.
I actually can’t believe people recommend the Layton series to improve in Japanese. WTF, I can’t understand the instructions in English, which I consider my second native language, much less in moon runes ಠ_ಠ
Mind you I am easily frustrated, don’t understand things all that well because well, I dunno why not, my brain sometimes glides through stuff. Just like kanji row, my eyes glaze over until I’m safely after them ಥ⌣ಥ
