Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is a Work of Nostalgia and I’m a Sucker For It

I’ve just realised I’ve never talked about FF7, and I won’t for now because I’ve played it too many years ago and can honestly say I remember almost nothing. But there’s a game I love that is connected to it, and that made me cry tons. It’s this one.

For those that don’t know, Crisis Core is about Zack Fair, a side-character from the original game that was missable to see his scenes. For many years, a decade maybe?, no one ever cared about him, until this game came about and completely changed that around.

I’ll talk a little about my relationship with FF7 and why I’m very fond of this game, but at the same time I do not prefer Zack over Cloud, or Cloud over Zack. I like them equally.

FF7 was the first game I saw at a young age of 6-7, I’m not sure anymore, and I remember vividly crying over a character dying in a CG scene (yes, I’m not spoiling it even tho it’s old) each time I saw the scene. It wasn’t until I was a big older and was allowed near the console and games, at 9-10, that I tried playing it but was wholly inept at it. I didn’t know english, so therefore I didn’t know the menus, and how to load a save, and redid the scene until the marketplace dozens of time. Yet I never tired of it, and I still consider CD1 to be the best one, since I feel after coming to the open map it gets very fragmented. Either way, moving on, this just means I’m both very willingly to overlook issues, problems and even frustrations, because this was when I could play these characters in HD. It was always what I dreamt would’ve happened for PS2, but never did.

So why am I talking about this? Because this game does have issues with small maps, repetitive stuff, broken summoning and help because of it being random, but in the end, it’s still a masterpiece for my heart. It also has story and character issues, specially continuity errors and the whole shebang, but fuck that. I don’t care, man!

Zack is an amazing character, and I loved my puppy since the beginning. Upbeat MC’s are a bit of a rarity in the FF world, and Zack is both hardworking, handsome and genuine. I didn’t think I’d fall quite so in lovee with this game, flaws and all, and I think it’s because of the characters.

Seeing Aeris, now Aerith, in HD, moving and talking (and I’ll admit right here I played the undub version because MAAYA SAKAMOTO VOICES HER AND SHE’S MY BIAS) was my wet dream, as was Sephiroth. Plus the amazing CG’s of fights and iconic scenes were so amazing, and the remastered OST is awesome. The few original tracks are so good and my favourite of them all. There’s just something super pretty about them, I advise everyone to go hear The Price of Freedom!

This is a pretty good action RPG too, and it’s fun to play and engage for 35 hours.

I…the ending wrecked me, I cried so dang much and it was so beautiful and yet so heartbreaking, I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days. I guess because this touched me so down, I haven’t been able to replay it. The memories are so fresh today as they were some 5-6 years ago when I played it. Which shows I’m both a fangirl and also how much it impacted me.

This game isn’t for everyone, maybe it’s mostly my nostalgia goggles colouring it better than it is, but it was a damn good ride and I’d ride it again, if I got amnesia/my memories of it wiped off.
